Well, from what we now know, Canaris and other high placed people lied to Hitler about Russia's numbers and his generals made mistakes, later blaming Hitler as being inept.

Germany should have sued for peace with Stalin either in early 1942 after the retreat from Moscow, or a year later after the Stalingrad disaster and the Third Battle of Kharkov in March 1943. Perhaps the last opportunity was immediately after the failure of the Kursk offensive in August 1943 as shortly after, the Red Army (by the end of 1943) was utterly unstoppable, just as Germany's troubles mounted on other fronts and Stalin would've had no reason to compromise.

I was lucky enough to speak to a Wehrmacht soldier who served on the Eastern Front. He told me about an attack by the Russians on his position. The Russian leadership sent wave after wave of infantrymen. These were often just men from surrounding villages. They were planned to be sent forward as cannon fodder. When the well-trained soldiers of the Red Army arrived, his unit had no more ammunition because everything had been fired in the previous waves. The only option left for them was to flee.

The Reason Germany lost the war was 1 Goering was a boastful but shallow yes man. Made too many assumptions about British civilians ability to withstand bombing 2) The ability to build more planes than he believed possible. So Hitler not finishing business with British before attacking Russia was the biggest mistake of all. Not listening to his professional commanders. 100’s of thousands perished according to his whims and insecurity. Surrender soon after DDay when most commanders knew it was only a matter of time compounded the destruction and final political results

Don't listen to American propaganda. The real reason why Hitler lost the war was because he attacked USSR. Even if is a 2 versus 1 war with USA and UK versus USSR alone in the 1940s, both USA and UK will still lose the war after a few years. Even if it is a 1 on 1 war with Nazi Germany versus USSR alone, Nazi Germany will still lose the war after a few years. USSR is too huge. USSR's forces are too huge.

It was not a mistake to invade Russia then because that has always been his hidden objective. That became more obvious when he's desperately looking for a truce with Britain. A truce with Britain would have afforded him more troops and resources for the Babarosa operations. Unfortunately he took the risk of mind games with britain and all out war with Stalin..

Because they were never allowed to retreat, even strategically. In front of them they had the all mighty Wehrmacht German army with the most technologically advanced modern weapons and tactics, commanders available on the battlefield and behind them they had a rag tag third rate army and weapons with incompetent officers and commanders and the dreaded and feared NKVD, Stalin’s secret police with automatic machine guns on turrets with direct orders to kill all Russian Red Army soldiers who dared to retreat. Those poor soldiers were nothing more than cannon fodder for Stalin and the march to capture Berlin at all cost and they all knew it. The only thing they had going for them was their numbers, they had plenty of that.

HItler felt obliged to rescue his pal Mussolini in Yugoslavia and Greece in the spring of 1941. This cost the Germans several weeks. Had they launched Barbarossa in early May (after the frost had dissapated), it would have been (as one participant told me) "nonstop to Moscow.
